Getting our asset interventions right first time saves cost and helps us run an even safer, better performing railway.

Bringing unprecedented change to infrastructure

Rail: an industry born out of industrial revolution, which is now deploying new technologies to transform itself further. In this fast-moving, ever-changing context, we helped our client to lead the way in delivering complex engineering infrastructure projects.

Challenges
With an anticipated future increase in rail usage, both higher passenger numbers and more trains on the track, our client had to find new ways to meet this increased demand – whilst saving nearly £2bn. New digital technologies provided the answer: with advances in data management and analytics applications, we knew there was an opportunity to deliver greater insight to our client's engineering community.

Of course, this is a lot of data – so we helped our client deliver a range of mobile devices and decision support tools to their frontline staff, which helped them capture, maintain and access quality, joined-up data. Collaborative development and rigorous testing has resulted in over 800 UK-wide engineers using the solution to make better decisions on track management every day.

How we worked on the project
We employed a "Model Office" approach to harness the capabilities and expertise of the Subject Matter Experts within our client's business. This involved engaging a cross section of business users to provide us with a real depth of understanding, and to help us design how best to embed these new technologies and ways of working in the business.

What we achieved

Rail engineers now have access to enhanced insight to ensure they are doing the right work, in the right place at the right time
Hundreds of improved decisions are made on managing their track assets every day
More preventative track maintenance and renewal is being achieved – resulting in fewer asset faults and failures
Where issues do occur better decisions are leading to more first time fixes and fewer repeat faults across the asset estate
All of this is contributing to a reduced number of separate interventions and less intrusive work on the track
Ultimately, customers, rail operators and the travelling public are seeing less disruptions to train journeys – leading to a better experience all round
